23. When the Going Gets Tough, by Billy Ocean, from The Jewel of the Nile (1985)
When the going gets tough, the tough get Billy Ocean to sing the theme song of their smash hit romantic comedy. Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, was such a huge hit in 1984 that a sequel was inevitable. The Jewel of the Nile was not as good as its predecessor (although it made more money), but you can’t say anything bad about the main track from the album. When the Going Gets Tough is just flat out fun – just like Romancing the Stone was and The Jewel of the Nile almost was.
Stats: Number 1 in the UK and Australia, number 2 in the US.
Penalty Points: The Jewel of the Nile is not as good as Romancing the Stone.
Bonus Points: Awesome ’80s sax solo (involving a saxophone bigger than Danny DeVito); Douglas, Turner and DeVito rock the film clip – in white tuxedos no less!
