24. I Believe I Can Fly, by R Kelly, from Space Jam (1996)
When he’s not writing ridiculous songs about hiding in the closet of his mistress’ house hoping her husband doesn’t find him, R Kelly is writing inspiring songs for half-animated family films starring elite athletes. Space Jam was a vehicle for Michael Jordan and Looney Tunes, centred on Bugs Bunny and co. playing a bunch of aliens in a game of basketball to win their freedom, and getting MJ on board to give them a better chance.
This soundtrack was actually really good, with contributions from Coolio, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, LL Cool J, and even comedian Chris Rock, but the enduring song was Kelly’s ode to optimism. Although his belief in flying may have simply been a dream about being Michael Jordan.
Stats: Number 1 in the UK, number 2 in the US, number 24 in Australia; Grammy win.
Penalty Points: R Kelly has never won an NBA championship.
Bonus Points: Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan on the same team? Can’t beat that.
