The 30 Best Movie Songs of the Last 40 Years

29 Jun

21. The Power of Love, by Huey Lewis and the News, from Back to the Future (1985)

When Marty McFly travelled 30 years into the future, he probably heard Huey Lewis and the News’ The Power of Love on the radio. That’s because the lead song from Back to the Future was an instant hit, giving the band their first ever number one single in the US, and has continued to get steady air time ever since. It’s hard to imagine Michael J. Fox on his skateboard, hitching rides from unsuspecting drivers’ rear bumpers, without the track cranking in his ears.

And you don’t need a copy of Gray’s Sports Almanac to know that in the future people will still be listening to it. Although probably not on a Walkman.

Stats: Number 1 in the US and Australia, number 9 in the UK; Academy Award nomination; Golden Globe nomination.

Penalty Points: The best musical moment from the film was actually Marty McFly playing Johnny B Goode.

Bonus Points: Huey Lewis cameos in the movie as one of the judges listening to McFly’s band audition. Lewis is the one who says that the music is “too darn loud” – even though the song being played in none other than The Power of Love.
