29 Jun

The Daniel Day-Lewis Tier: 30 – 21

30. Kokomo, by the Beach Boys, from Cocktail (1988)

When looking for a band to write a song for a movie based on cocktail waiters working the beaches of Jamaica, who else could you turn to but the Beach Boys? From the steel drums to the signature harmonies, this cruisy number automatically transports the listener to a sunny beach, cocktail in hand and a holiday romance in mind. That’s where we wanna go indeed.

Stats: Number 1 in the US and Australia; Grammy nomination; Golden Globe nomination.

Penalty Points: Not many people remember that Kokomo was from Cocktail.

Bonus Points: Not many people remember that Kokomo was from Cocktail (it really wasn’t a good movie); swooning ’80s saxophone solo; John Stamos playing the bongos in the film clip.
