The 30 Best Movie Songs of the Last 40 Years – Part II

19. Skyfall, by Adele, from Skyfall(2012)

James Bond movies are known for many things: high octane action sequences, cool gadgets, Bond women, double entendres, and of course, killer songs. When it came time to find an artist to contribute to the most recent Bond instalment, there was only one real choice to fill the shoes of the artists that came beforehand: Adele.

Following the tradition of Shirley Bassey, Adele’s Skyfall is a classic Bond title song, both haunting and dangerous, just like 007 himself. Adele’s voice is so powerful she could disarm even the most malevolent of villains.

Stats: Number 2 in the UK, number 5 in Australia, number 7 in the US; Academy Award win; Golden Globe win; Grammy win.

Penalty Points: Adele, as far as I’m aware, has yet to foil an international terrorist plot on behalf of MI6.

Bonus Points: I possibly bumped Skyfall up a few notches as a tribute to the cracking Bond songs that preceded it: Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, Nobody Does It Better, Goldfinger, et al.
