11. Blaze of Glory, by Jon Bon Jovi, from Young Guns II (1990)
Bon Jovi is one of the biggest rock bands ever, but lead singer Jon Bon Jovi has only ever had one number one US single. That single is Blaze of Glory, from the western film Young Guns II.
Young Guns starred a slew of talented young actors, among them Emilio Estevez, who loved Bon Jovi’s song Dead or Alive so much he wanted to include it in the film. It wasn’t used, Jon Bon Jovi pointing out that the song was about the band’s constant touring and had nothing to do with the story of the movie. The idea of writing a song about cowboys intrigued him, however, so when a sequel to Young Guns was in the works and he was approached again, Jon penned Blaze of Glory. The song went number one with a bullet (cowboy pun!) and remains his biggest solo effort.
Stats: Number 1 in the US and Australia, number 13 in the UK; Golden Globe win; Academy Award nomination; Grammy nomination.
Penalty Points: It’s a shame Dead or Alive isn’t about cowboys.
Bonus Points: JBJ wearing nothing up top but a leather vest. Grrrw!
Tune back in soon to find out what makes the top ten, and which movie song is crowned the greatest of them all!
